Introduction to Playback Theatre
PLAYBACK THEATRE is spontaneious dramatic improvisation of real life personal experience in which audience member's memories, dreams, hopes, feelings and concerns are enacted in ways, which connect the individual story to the group story and to universal themes.
Playback Theatre was first developed by Jonathan Fox, an actor and psychodramatist, in the mid-70s in the U.S.A. There are now over 80 companies world wide, connected through the International Playback Theatre Network. Performances and workshops are given in all kinds of settings: community groups; conferences, hospitals, hospices and day centres, schools and colleges, prisons and businesses etc., as well as in open public performance.
Playback practitioners come from all walks of life and the form can be taught and used with most client and service user groups: after all, we all have stories to tell.
